New Funding Secured for Lagan Swing Bridge Linking Sailortown to Titanic Quarter
Titanic Quarter welcomes the recent announcement of £1.1 million in funding from the Department for Infrastructure, which will support progress on key connectivity projects across Belfast, including a proposed pedestrian and cycle bridge linking Sailortown with Queen’s Island and the Titanic Quarter.
As part of Belfast City Council’s ‘Under the Bridges’ initiative, £600,000 has been allocated to develop concept designs for the Sailortown–Queen’s Island bridge. This investment marks a significant milestone in long-standing efforts to enhance active travel and connectivity along the city’s waterfront.
The proposed 140-metre swing bridge would connect Abercorn Basin, adjacent to the SSE Arena in Titanic Quarter, to Barrow Square near Clarendon Dock – creating a vital link between communities in Sailortown, City Quays, and North Belfast with Queen’s Island. The bridge would include an opening section to accommodate river traffic on the River Lagan.
Titanic Quarter Ltd is proud to be part of the Waterfront Taskforce, which identified the need for this strategic infrastructure. The taskforce includes Belfast City Council, the Maritime Belfast Trust, Belfast Harbour, the Department for Communities, and the Department for Infrastructure.
This connection will:
- Complete the city’s Harbour Loop for walking and cycling
- Provide seamless access to the newly refurbished Yorkgate Train Station
- Support sustainable travel options for both residents and visitors
- Enhance regeneration efforts in Sailortown and surrounding areas
Claire Bradshaw, spokesperson for Titanic Quarter Ltd, commented:
“This funding is a vital first step in realising a vision of better-connected, more accessible waterfront communities. Improved pedestrian and cycle links will strengthen Titanic Quarter’s role as a thriving destination and create lasting benefits for Belfast.”
We look forward to working closely with our partners as the project moves into the concept design phase.
