Little Amal

Little Amal is the 12 foot puppet of a 10 year old Syrian refugee child at the heart of The Walk. She has become a global symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees.

Since July 2021, Amal has travelled to 160 towns and cities in 15 countries and been welcomed by two million people on the street and by tens of millions online. 440 events unique to each community that she visits have been created for her by thousands of artists and civil society and faith leaders.

Amal’s journey is a celebration of migration and cultural diversity that tells the story of the contributions made by refugees and immigrants. It represents the refugee story as one of potential, success, respect, hospitality and kindness.

Between 16 – 19 May, we will welcome Little Amal to Belfast with four days of free celebrations co-created with theatre director Des Kennedy, leading artists and residents of the city. Little Amal then embarks on an onward journey across the island of Ireland finishing in Dublin.

On the evening of 16th May a welcome spectacle will take place on the Titanic Slipways to mark the beginning of Amal’s journey. More details to be confirmed.

Delivered by ArtsEkta, Belfast City Council and The Walk Productions as part of Belfast 2024.
